Tinnitus can have many different noises – not just ringing in the ears

People that suffer from tinnitus experience noises in one or both ears. Sometimes it can even sound like the noises are coming from inside their head.

The noises that they hear come in many different sounds and volumes. Indeed, while some people hear quite soft sounds many others report their experience as unbearable.

The most common noises reported are buzzing, ringing and whistling. The noises can also change and some people even report that they hear more than one noise at a time. This has been attributed to the fact that different things can cause the initial onset. People that are stressed, for example, might find that they hear different noises depending on their stress levels.

A lot of research has gone into recreating these sounds and it has been a process that has gone on for over 20 years. The studies have included techniques where tinnitus suffers report what they can hear in a sound proof area to make sure there is not outside interferance. These sounds then get played back to the patients by using a music synthesiser. When the noise got as close as possible to what the patient reported it is then recorded for the research purposes.

It is estimated that more than 60 million people suffer from bad cases of tinnitus. Of course, there are those than might experience the occasional ringing in the ear at some point in their lives and there are quite a few things that will cause this. The most common of which is the loud volume at music festivals and concerts. This may also happen if you stand near a speaker at any music gig.

Many people have said that their tinnitus is so bad that is a huge hinderance on their life; not only does it affect their sleep, but it is hard to concentrate at work, while driving and leads to very little time to relax. It can be quite daunting to hear these noises since there are so many different ones. They can also be constant or intermittent.
